About Our School : School History

Background

The school opened in 1863 and was originally a small village school for about 50 children. In 1884 the school log book records that the total grant for that year was 21 pounds,  15s and  5d.

These were the days of  'payment by results' and the scramble for free places that was common to all elementary schools. The log book is available to anyone interested in a more detailed history of the school.

Since then, the school has grown to its present size of around 310 children. The school has 11 classrooms, multi-purpose hall/dining

room, kitchen, children's kitchen, medical room, library and music room, assisted changing facility and toilet for the disabled, a community room, staffroom and an ICT suite/training room with its own interactive board. Dringhouses 'Out of School Club' operates a breakfast club on the school premises and an After School Club and Holiday Club in the Social Club opposite the school. 2004 marked the schools' centenary celebrations which provided an opportunity to research the history of the school.

Children are admitted to the school in September  and normally transfer at eleven years of age to one of the secondary schools in York.

The classes are arranged in mixed year groups. The classes are arranged in teams of three classes, except in the Early Years. There are two classes of predominantly Reception children mixed with some children in Year 1, three classes of mixed Year 1 and Year 2, three classes of mixed Year 3 and Year 4 and three classes of mixed Year 5 and Year 6. A power point presentation of how we teach mixed year groups can be viewed on this website.

Each class in key stage 2 goes swimming once a week for half a term at the Edmund Wilson pool.

The children stay with their own teacher for most lessons and occasionally classes may change for specialist subjects.
